State Senator-Elect Sarah Mcbride

Democratic candidate Sarah Mcbride won the Delaware State Senate election, becoming the first State Senator who publicly identifies as a trans woman. After her inauguration, Mcbride will be the highest-ranking trans official in the US Government.

Mcbride received 73% of the votes in Delaware’s District 1, overwhelmingly beating her Republican opponent.

After winning the election, Sarah McBride said, "I hope tonight shows an LGBTQ kid that our democracy is big enough for them, too."

A former spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, Sarah McBride is largely credited for passing the Delaware Gender Identity Nondiscrimination Act. The legislation that provides trans people equal legal protection, making it illegal to discriminate against people in employment, housing, insurance, and public accommodations based on their gender identity.

A lifelong activist and advocate for human rights, Mcbride’s politics for Delaware focus on affordable healthcare for all, paid leave for families, supporting public schooling and reforming the criminal justice system.
